Warning before using a RANE TTM57 Mixer for the 1st time

All, been a while since I visited but thought I'd share something I was recently made aware of the hard way. I had a guest DJ appearance this past Saturday. I was all ready as it was my 1st time using Serato scratch LIVE in a club. I've had Serato for the past 5-6 months or so but have only tinkered with it at home. I figured it was time to use it in a club atmosphere. I usually use vinyl but this night the only difference was instead of digging through my crate I would be digging through my digital crates on Serato which is actually pretty sweet.
Anyhow, I thought it was a simple plug & play device as I have plugged in to other Serato Boxes & no issues, hardware was recognized right away by the laptop. Last I used it was at a Internet radio appearance I did on DJAM's "Lifted Radio" show along with AJ Mora & all worked well so I figured no problems should be enountered. Well, I found out in the case of the RANE TTM 57 mixer which has the Serato interface built in, I encountered a "Hardware not recognized" message on my laptop. I panicked as I did not take back up sources for music, no Vinyl or CDs After struggling for 3min or so the resident DJ said that I needed to download drivers to have it work on the TTM 57 RANE mixer which was news to me. If you do have it it should be located in the following area on your hard drive, C:\Program Files\Serato folder, if you have serato versions 1.8.0, 1.8.1, or 1.8.2 installed which I do, you should see something called "driver_updater." It's a little application & if you do not have it download it from the Serato site now. You must be connected to a RANE TTM57 mixer when running the app for it to take effect. Once installed you are set for life unless you change laptops. I did not have the app at the time so I could not play.
Luckily the other DJs before me went over their time so only about 30min had to be covered by the resident DJ. Resident DJ did offer for me to use his laptop but after taking a quick glance at his music plus not being used to the key positions on his keyboard I told him it would be best if he covered my spot which he did, totally cool guy. I still got paid for appearing as well which was cool but I felt guilty as sin.
So a few lessons learned:
01. Always take back up sources of music when using laptop's/computer SW (I am sure you all knew this but the newbies to laptop/SW DJ'ng need to learn this like myself)
02. Download the "driver_updater" from the Serato website prior to going to an appearance. You never know what type of mixer they have & in case they do have a RANE TTM57, you'll be ready.
I have to admit it was nice just to show up to a gig with a back pack with just my headphones, laptop & control records, no lugging that heavy crate of records. Next time I'll take a USB with my tracks plus have a CD back up of everything. Next appearnce will be on October 18th & I plan on using Serato but I'll have back up this time

Struggling with Bar owner...

i've been working for this bar/club for over a year now. it's been very pleasant and though it was a bit rough at first, since it had hardly any clientele, it slowly but surely progressed into pack nights (at least on my nights) and i have made a connection with the regulars now at the bar.
about 1 month ago, the owner threw a birthday party for his nephew as he was coming of age, and was very excited. after that night, i started to see him steadily at the bar, and he seemed to have been on the payroll because he was always there. one night, i got at the bar a little early, because i had a contract appointment with a customer for the mobile business and since it was nearby the bar, i just programmed myself that i would go to the bar, instead of having to drive 30 minutes back home. i found that the nephew was in the booth, and to my first impression he was playing music like a dj. i didn't know what to think. so i sat by the bar, and just waited for the hour to come up so i had to start to play. the owner of the club was telling me that his nephew liked the thought of becoming a dj and was wondering if i'd school him for the position as a backup dj. now then, i have never failed a night at this club. though i do not work on saturdays, but since they have a live band playing, they never needed me. so i then reminded the club owner that i have never failed a night, so it would be a long time since his nephew may get the opportunity to be the dj for a night.
the owner just asked me to just teach a few moves here and there. and told me that he usually plays during the afternoon cocktail hours and he might be thinking of having some extra nights for his nephew to practice. which means i will probably be getting cut on my other nights! so i then started to really inquire about this, and the owner was just trying to walk away leaving me confused.
i didn't really spent time with his nephew. i recall reading somewhere here that teaching others can backfire on us, and i didn't want to be another statistic. aside from that, i don't have the time to teach another person the ropes--especially if he is in favor of maybe replacing me. i do understand that maybe the owner wants to keep the bar in the family, but then it dawned on me that he probably doesn't value my workmanship and status at this club.
i then decided to take a week off. meaning that 4 nights he would have to struggle with his nephew having to cover for me. i spend just one day teaching him the ropes, and told him that the rest just takes a lot of practice. the following week i heard from patrons that they were very unhappy with the performance of the other dj (nephew) and that the nights suffered as people were just leaving early. waitresses were trying to keep the people there, but it was not working. i did get a phone call from the owner that if i could show up on friday, but i did reply back, that i still needed the full week off, since i needed to take care of some personal matters--bs--but that was the story i gave him.
now after that awful week, the owner now wants to pay me by teaching his nephew more on what he needs to know. i don't get it! isn't it obvious that this kid has a lot to learn and you can't learn this overnight or over a week or month of training. plus the crowd we get there is not easy to work with, it's so diverse and you gotta know your past music to know what works and what doesn't and since the nights are so different from each other, that what worked on wednesday doesn't work on thursday and so on.
i don't know what else to do. i have to have a heart to heart talk with the owner about this, but he is stubborn when it comes this his nephew or something of that sort.
if you got some advice, please let me know. losing this gig will put a big dent on my income. help!

DJM700 & Problem setting up MIDI with SSL HELP!

Hey everyone..Got a query regarding ScratchLIVE and MIDI setup..
Ive recently bought a DJM700 and a MIDI-to-USB cable to connect to my laptop, however i can't get ScratchLIVE to recognise the MIDI signals from the mixer. (Ableton won't recognise MIDI either)
Basically my questions are:
Has anyone used a DJM700 with SSL and got the MIDI to work?
Are there any tips or tricks in setting up MIDI?
I know the DJM700 has 16 channels MIDI i can select, WTF are they for?
I am running the latest SSL software 1.8.2
NOTE: the cable i bought works on my mates computer and his trigger-finger MIDI contoller, plus i know my DJM700 is putting out a MIDI signal because there is a light on the cable which lights up when you hit any of the MIDI buttons on the mixer.
Sorry about the long dribble but i thought it might paint the picture and get some suggestions.
Thanks!
FRUSTRATED Dave
